Staking commits capital to secure a network in return for a share of issuance and fees. Mining does the same with hardware and electricity. Both are paid for producing something the network needs, and both carry losses that marketing rarely mentions — slashing, downtime, exit queues and the fact that a reward denominated in a diluting supply is not pure income.
