Bitcoin Nears $80K as Gemini Strikes Landmark Deal to Bring Crypto Prediction Markets to Main Street Brokerages

Bitcoin Nears $80K as Gemini Strikes Landmark Deal to Bring Crypto Prediction Markets to Main Street Brokerages

Bitcoin was trading close to $78,000 on Monday, holding onto most of the gains from its strongest weekly run in roughly three years. Last week's roughly 24% surge was triggered by a Treasury buyback announcement that squeezed out more than $3 billion in short positions. Momentum has been reinforced by renewed demand for U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, short covering in derivatives markets, and a broader rebound in risk assets, which together pushed BTC to a recent high near $78,000 on August 22.

The bigger question for traders now is macro, not crypto. Attention has turned to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's upcoming address at the Jackson Hole symposium, with bond yields still sitting near multi-year highs. CoinShares head of research James Butterfill described the current rally as "a macro story, not a crypto one," pointing to softer inflation data and weaker payroll numbers as having undermined the case for further monetary tightening. Ethereum has moved in tandem, opening Monday at $2,463 before climbing to around $2,507 by mid-morning, its highest level since late January.

Analysts note the setup is more balanced than a typical blow-off top: the current long-short ratio is less aggressively bullish than the weekly average, which reduces the risk that the move is being driven purely by crowded retail longs — though elevated open interest still leaves room for a sharper pullback if sentiment turns. On the policy side, Washington has advanced two crypto-related initiatives recently, including an SEC proposal that could open a formal pathway for crypto products, further improving the broader digital-asset backdrop.

Gemini and Apex Team Up to Bring Regulated Prediction Markets to Retail Brokerages

While Bitcoin's price action dominates headlines, a quieter but potentially far-reaching development landed Monday from the regulatory side of the industry. Gemini and Apex Fintech Solutions signed a letter of intent under which Gemini would provide execution and clearing for crypto event contracts distributed through Apex's brokerage network, giving brokers regulated access without having to build their own exchange infrastructure.

Under the arrangement, Gemini Titan — a Gemini subsidiary — would become the exclusive regulated venue for crypto-focused event contracts offered to brokerage customers connected through Apex's Futures Commission Merchant. The deal is the product of years of regulatory groundwork: Gemini Titan secured a Designated Contract Market license from the CFTC in December 2025, the approval required to list and trade event contracts, and in April 2026 sister entity Gemini Olympus obtained a Derivatives Clearing Organization license, bringing clearing and settlement in-house.

"We deliberately chose to build our predictions platform in-house," said Gemini CEO Tyler Winklevoss, framing the move as a long-term bet on event-based trading. The scale so far is still modest relative to the sector's leaders: Gemini's second-quarter 2026 earnings showed more than 225 million event contracts traded on Titan with over 27,000 cumulative traders, while Polymarket and Kalshi continue to dominate the space with tens of billions of dollars in monthly volume. Beyond crypto, the agreement also leaves room for Gemini and Apex to collaborate on additional contract categories — including sports, economics, and financial markets — on a non-exclusive basis.

Why It Matters

Together, the two stories point to a market maturing on two fronts at once. Bitcoin's advance is being driven less by crypto-native speculation and more by macro positioning ahead of a pivotal Fed moment, while Gemini's push into mainstream brokerage distribution shows regulated crypto-adjacent products — not just spot tokens — working their way into ordinary investment accounts. Both trends are worth watching closely as the U.S. regulatory and monetary backdrop continues to shift.
