How OBOL rates instant exchangers

Instant exchangers are the least examined corner of crypto: no order book, no published fee schedule, just a quoted rate. The margin is hidden inside that rate, so the first thing our rubric measures is the spread against market mid at the moment of quoting — the real price of convenience.

The second, weighted just as heavily, is conduct when a swap is flagged. Most of these services are non-custodial only in marketing: your coins sit with them between legs. If an address trips an AML screen, the question is whether you get your funds back, how long it takes, and what documents are demanded from a service that never asked for any at the start.

Fixed rate versus floating rate

A floating rate can move against you between deposit and settlement; a fixed rate costs more up front but is a commitment. We check whether fixed quotes are actually honoured when the market gaps, because a fixed rate that is silently renegotiated is worse than an honest float.

Our standing advice

Use these services for what they are good at — moving between assets that share no common venue, quickly, without an account. Do not use them as custody, do not send more than you would accept losing to a compliance hold, and screen the receiving address yourself before you send.

FAQ

Why are the scores in this category lower than elsewhere?
Because the sector's baseline is weaker. Hidden spreads and unpredictable AML holds are common, and we score against what a fair service could be, not against the sector average.
Are no-KYC swaps really no-KYC?
Only until an automated screen flags your transaction. Every service here reserves the right to demand identification before releasing funds, and most exercise it. Assume verification is possible on any swap.
Is a fixed rate worth the extra cost?
For large swaps or volatile assets, usually yes. For small stablecoin swaps, the fixed-rate premium often exceeds the volatility it protects against.
