Bitcoin Rebounds Above $80K as Midterm Results Reshape U.S. Crypto Outlook

Bitcoin climbed back above $80,000 on November 5 after a short squeeze and the first spot ETF inflows in four sessions, even as a Democratic sweep of Congress clouds the outlook for U.S. crypto legislation.

Bitcoin Recovers After a Multi-Week Low

As the election count came in, Bitcoin slid to roughly $75,700, its weakest level in several weeks. A rebound followed once U.S. equities turned higher, with the S&P 500 gaining about 1.6% on Wednesday while oil prices and Treasury yields eased. Ether climbed nearly 6% to around $2,425, and Solana and XRP also finished the session in positive territory.

Short Squeeze and ETF Flows Add Fuel

Derivatives markets did much of the heavy lifting. About $378 million in short positions were liquidated within a single hour, forcing bearish traders to buy back and amplifying the move higher. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs also attracted $74.6 million in net inflows on November 4, according to Farside Investors, ending three straight sessions of withdrawals that had removed roughly $1.16 billion.

The picture under the surface was mixed. Fidelity's FBTC took in $236.7 million, while BlackRock's IBIT saw $201.2 million leave. Analysts at Bitfinex also noted that the recovery has leaned on short sellers closing positions rather than on fresh buyers entering the market.

Why the Midterm Result Matters for Crypto Policy

Democrats won both the House and the Senate, a result that complicates the path of the CLARITY Act, the market structure bill the industry has pushed for years. The measure passed the House in July 2025 and cleared the Senate Banking Committee 15 to 9 in May 2026. However, a September 15 procedural vote in the full Senate failed 49 to 50, well short of the 60 votes needed to open debate.

A Compass Point analyst expects Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has long opposed crypto, to chair the Senate Banking Committee under the new majority, which could stall supportive legislation. Still, the picture is not entirely one-sided. The crypto sector spent more than $300 million backing candidates from both parties across recent election cycles, and some Democrats favor a light-touch approach. Reports also suggest House Democrats are weighing a broader bill that would expand the SEC's role and limit CFTC oversight of futures trading.

Key Levels and Risks to Watch

Immediate resistance sits between $81,300 and $82,000, while support is found near $80,000 and then around $76,000, a level many analysts call the line in the sand for November. Bitcoin remains about 41% below its October 2025 record above $122,000, and the market is still absorbing the fallout from the roughly $6.3 billion Binance hack disclosed on October 29. A CryptoQuant contributor also cautions that cycle indicators do not yet confirm the end of the correction.

What This Means for U.S. Investors

For American investors, the near-term driver is likely to be a mix of ETF flows, leverage and headlines from Washington rather than any single event. The legislative timeline now matters as much as the daily chart: the new Congress convenes on January 3, 2027, and a revised market structure bill would have to be negotiated under a different balance of power. Until then, existing SEC and CFTC rules remain the framework for the industry.
