Software wallets fail differently from hardware. The key sits on a general-purpose device that also runs your browser, so our rubric leads with how that key is stored and whether any part of it ever reaches a vendor server. Wallets that quietly back up key material to a cloud account by default are marked down, however convenient that is.
Transaction transparency carries almost as much weight as auditing. In practice, most wallet users lose funds by signing something they did not understand — an unlimited approval, a permit signature, a drainer contract dressed as a mint. Wallets that simulate transactions and translate them into plain language prevent more losses than any cryptographic feature.
Several wallets in this list offer recovery services, embedded exchanges and cloud backup. These are not disqualifying, but they change who can access your funds under what circumstances. We describe the trade-off in each review rather than pretending the wallet is purely non-custodial when it is not.
