Kraken has operated since 2011 and has never lost customer funds to an exchange-level compromise. In a sector where Mt. Gox, FTX, Bitfinex and Bybit all appear in the same sentence as nine-figure losses, that is the single most meaningful fact in this review, and it is why Kraken takes the top security mark of 9.5 and the highest overall score in our exchange rubric.
What Kraken actually is
The business runs a spot exchange, a derivatives venue, an OTC desk, staking services and an institutional arm. It holds a Wyoming special purpose depository institution charter, is registered as a VASP across several European jurisdictions, and has secured MiCA authorisation for the EU market. Revenue is trading fees, spread on the instant-buy product, staking commission and interest. It is privately held, so there are no public financial statements, which is the main disclosure gap against Coinbase.
Proof of reserves done properly
Most exchanges publish a Merkle-tree snapshot of assets and call it proof of reserves. Kraken's programme, conducted with an independent accounting firm, includes liabilities as well as assets, which is what turns a marketing exercise into an actual solvency statement — a venue can hold plenty of bitcoin and still be insolvent if it owes more than it holds. Users can verify their own balance is included in the attested liability set. This is the strongest reserve verification in the category and a large part of why the security score sits where it does.
Fees: use Pro, not the simple buy
Kraken Pro charges roughly 0.16% maker and 0.26% taker at the entry tier, falling with 30-day volume — mid-table rather than cheap, more expensive than Binance or OKX and considerably cheaper than Coinbase's retail screen. The Kraken Instant Buy interface applies a spread of around 1.5% plus a percentage fee, which is where most casual users unknowingly lose money. Staking is available at commission rates well below Coinbase's, and fiat funding in USD and EUR is reliable through established banking partners.
Liquidity and asset range
Depth on major pairs is good without matching Binance, and Kraken is consistently among the deepest venues for EUR and USD pairs specifically. The listing policy is conservative: a few hundred assets, screened, with fewer speculative additions than the offshore venues. Traders chasing new tokens will find it limiting; anyone trading majors will not notice.
Who should use Kraken
It is the best all-round choice for European and international users who want security first and still need liquidity, and the strongest counterparty in this list for anyone unwilling to hold on an offshore venue. Traders needing the long tail of listings should pair it with a satellite account elsewhere. The only real trap is the same one Coinbase sets: buy through Pro, never through the simple interface.
