What Is Morpho? How the Crypto Lending Network Works

Morpho is a non-custodial onchain lending network in which lenders and borrowers interact through immutable smart contracts rather than a company balance sheet. Its building blocks are Morpho Blue (isolated, variable-rate lending markets), Morpho Vaults (deposit products managed by independent curators) and Morpho Midnight (fixed-rate, fixed-term loans launched on Base in July 2026). The public interface and documentation are run by the Morpho Association, a French nonprofit in Paris. The distinction that matters most for users: Morpho itself does not pick your risk. Each market's collateral, oracle and liquidation threshold, and each vault's allocation, are chosen by whoever created or curates it.

Who runs Morpho

Morpho has three layers of control: a nonprofit that maintains the interface, a company that writes code, and token holders who govern the parts of the protocol that are not frozen in code.

The Morpho Association publishes morpho.org and the documentation, holds the intellectual property of open-source codebases such as morpho-blue and vault-v2 on GitHub, and is the contracting party in the Terms of Use (version dated September 11, 2026). Those terms are governed by French law.

Morpho Labs was started in Paris in 2021; Paul Frambot founded it and was joined by co-founders including Merlin Egalité and Mathis Gontier Delaunay, according to a February 2022 ActuIA report. In June 2025 Morpho announced that Morpho Labs SAS would become a wholly owned subsidiary of the Association through a 100% share transfer, alongside Morpho Labs Inc., a Delaware company that already belonged to it. The stated goal was to make the MORPHO token "the only asset" of the project, removing a separate equity layer that could profit independently of token holders.

MORPHO holders vote on Snapshot. According to the governance documentation, they can enable a fee switch (capped at 25% of borrower interest), whitelist new liquidation thresholds and interest rate models, and control the treasury and the upgradeable token contract. Approved actions are executed by a 5-of-9 multisig. Governance cannot rewrite the core lending contract: the documentation states that it is immutable.

Morpho Labs raised outside funding before the restructuring, including an $18 million round led by Andreessen Horowitz and Variant in 2022. The website lists backers such as Ribbit, a16z, Paradigm, Coinbase Ventures and Pantera.

Morpho's products

Morpho Blue: isolated lending markets

A Morpho Blue market pairs one loan asset with one collateral asset, plus a fixed oracle, interest rate model and liquidation loan-to-value (LLTV). Anyone can create a market, and once deployed its parameters cannot change. Rates are variable and depend on utilization. Because each market is isolated, a bad oracle or collapsing collateral in one market does not directly impair another. Morpho's address registry lists the core contract on Ethereum at `0xBBBBBbbBBb9cC5e90e3b3Af64bdAF62C37EEFFCb` and deployments on more than 50 networks as of October 2026.

Morpho Vaults: curated deposit products

Most depositors do not choose markets themselves. A vault accepts one asset and spreads it across approved markets. In Vaults V2, an Owner appoints a Curator, who sets adapters, caps, fees and allocators; Allocators move funds within those limits; Sentinels can veto pending changes and cut exposure. Most curator actions are timelocked so depositors can leave before a change takes effect. The risk documentation caps vault performance fees at 50% of interest and management fees at 5% per year.

Morpho Midnight: fixed-rate, fixed-term loans

Midnight lets lenders and borrowers agree on a rate and a maturity through offers rather than a pricing curve. It went live on Base in July 2026, The Block reported, with expansion to other networks planned but undated. Lender funds can wait in Morpho Blue earning a variable rate until a fixed-rate offer is taken, and positions with the same maturity are interchangeable, which allows early exit by selling to someone else.

Apps and companies built on Morpho

Morpho also sells infrastructure. The clearest consumer example is Coinbase's bitcoin-backed USDC loans, which Morpho says have run on its contracts since January 2025, with cbBTC as collateral. In that case the customer deals with Coinbase's app, not morpho.org.

How a Morpho loan works

A Morpho loan is overcollateralized: the borrower deposits more value than they take out and must keep the loan-to-value below the market's LLTV.

  1. Connect a self-custody wallet to the Morpho app or a third-party interface.
  2. Pick a market (for example, a stablecoin loan against wrapped ETH) and check its oracle and LLTV.
  3. Supply collateral, then borrow up to a margin below the LLTV.
  4. Interest accrues continuously at the market's variable rate (or at the agreed fixed rate on Midnight).
  5. Repay and withdraw collateral at any time; if LTV rises above the LLTV, anyone may liquidate.

Liquidation, illustrated with Morpho's documented example: a borrower has $100,000 of collateral in a market with an 86% LLTV. Debt grows to $86,010, pushing LTV just past the threshold. A liquidator repays the debt and receives roughly $90,310 of collateral, a bonus of about 5%. The borrower keeps about $9,690. The bonus depends on the LLTV and is capped at 15% by formula (liquidation docs). There is no grace period or margin call; monitoring is the borrower's job.

If collateral falls faster than liquidators can act, the shortfall becomes bad debt that lenders bear. How it reaches vault depositors depends on the vault version: V1.0 realizes the loss pro rata, V1.1 leaves it unrealized in the market, and V2 reflects it through a lower share price.

Fees and total cost

The Association states in its terms that it charges no fee for its services. Users still pay costs set by others.

CostWho sets itCap or range (as of October 2026)

Borrow interestMarket's interest rate model (variable) or Midnight offer (fixed)Market-driven

Vault management fee (V2)CuratorUp to 5% per year
Midnight market feesMarket configurationSettlement fee plus continuous fee capped at 1% annualized

A depositor's actual return is the borrower interest paid in the underlying markets, minus vault fees, minus any losses. Rates shown on vault pages are variable and are not a forecast.

Who can use Morpho, and where

Morpho requires a self-custody wallet, not an account, so the protocol itself performs no identity checks. The Terms of Use do restrict who may use the Association's services: people and entities residing in, located in or incorporated in territories under comprehensive OFAC, EU, UN or UK sanctions, and sanctioned persons, are excluded, and using a VPN to get around this is prohibited. Interfaces run by partners, such as Coinbase's loan product, apply their own eligibility rules.

A vault can also add gates, contracts that restrict who can deposit or transfer shares, which allows permissioned products. A misconfigured gate can also lock users out of deposits or withdrawals.

Security and audit record

Morpho's core contracts were reviewed by multiple firms before launch. The audits page lists OpenZeppelin, Spearbit and a Cantina contest for Morpho Blue (2023); Spearbit, Zellic, ChainSecurity, Blackthorn and a Cantina contest for Vaults V2 (2025); and several Spearbit, Blackthorn and Trust Security reviews plus a Cantina competition for Midnight (2026). A Cantina bug bounty of up to $2.5 million covers Blue, Midnight and Vaults. Audits reduce the chance of bugs in reviewed code; they do not cover a curator's market choices, a third-party oracle, or the collateral token itself.

The risks that most often hurt users sit outside the core contract:

  • Oracle risk. A manipulated or stale price can trigger unfair liquidations or leave bad debt.
  • Curator risk. A vault is only as conservative as the markets its curator enables.
  • Collateral risk. Wrapped or yield-bearing collateral can depeg.
  • Liquidity risk. If a market is fully borrowed, lenders may wait for repayments or new deposits before they can withdraw.
  • Phishing. As with any DeFi app, copycat interfaces can request harmful wallet approvals; use only the official domains listed below. See OBOL's guide on custodial vs non-custodial wallets for what self-custody protects and what it does not.

The MORPHO token

MORPHO is the governance token for the protocol, not equity in Morpho Labs. The token documentation sets maximum supply at 1 billion. Transfers were enabled on November 21, 2024; before that the token was non-transferable. The Ethereum contract is an upgradeable proxy at `0x58D97B57BB95320F9a05dC918Aef65434969c2B2`. Older "legacy" MORPHO can be wrapped 1:1, and only the wrapped version is transferable. Holding MORPHO gives voting power; it does not entitle holders to protocol revenue, and the Association has recommended that any fees be reinvested.

Withdrawing and exiting

Lenders can withdraw whenever the market or vault has idle liquidity. When utilization is high, interest rates rise to attract repayments, but there is no guaranteed withdrawal window. Vault depositors should also check pending timelocked changes: the timelock exists so they can exit before a new market or fee takes effect. Midnight lenders who want out before maturity need a buyer for their position. Borrowers exit by repaying the loan in full, which releases collateral.

FAQ

Is Morpho a bank or a custodian?
No. Morpho is a set of smart contracts; funds sit in those contracts and are controlled by users' wallets, not by the Morpho Association.
Is Morpho the same as Morpho Blue?
Morpho is the overall network and brand. Morpho Blue is its variable-rate lending primitive, alongside Morpho Vaults and Morpho Midnight.
Are Morpho's founders public?
Yes. Morpho Labs was founded in Paris in 2021 by Paul Frambot, who serves as CEO, with co-founders including Merlin Egalité and Mathis Gontier Delaunay.
Does Morpho require KYC?
Not at protocol level. Sanctions restrictions apply under the Association's terms, and partner apps or gated vaults may require identity checks.
