Most people never move to self-custody because seed phrases are intimidating and hardware wallets look like specialist equipment. Tangem removes both objections: the device is a card, setup takes minutes, and signing is a tap against a phone.
How the security works
Each card contains a certified secure element that generates the key on-device. The key cannot be extracted and never touches the phone; the app builds transactions, the card signs them by NFC. Firmware has been independently audited, and the cards require no battery or charging, which removes a long-term failure mode that every other device has.
The backup difference
Tangem's default redundancy is a set of two or three identical cards, kept in different places. There is no phrase to write down, which is precisely what makes it approachable and what changes the failure mode: lose all your cards and, without having exported a seed, the funds are gone. Newer firmware supports seed phrase import and export, which restores standard interoperability for users who want it — but the default path does not produce a phrase.
Coverage
Broad: Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM chains, Solana, Cardano, XRP and a long list of tokens, with staking available for several assets.
Who should use it
Beginners moving off exchanges, users who will not reliably store a written phrase, and anyone wanting a travel-friendly device that looks like nothing. Serious holders should still consider a device with standard seed backup as their primary store.
