The short answer

Crypto.com is the most broadly licensed consumer crypto platform, and the difference between using its app and using its exchange is the difference between paying a wide spread and paying a competitive fee. It scores 7.6/10, with regulatory standing of 8 against a cost mark of 6.5.

What we liked

  • Broad licence coverage across the EU, UK, Singapore and beyond
  • Genuinely good mobile product with card and earn integrated
  • Institutional-grade custody arrangements

Where it falls short

  • App spreads are much worse than the exchange fee schedule
  • Rewards programmes have been repeatedly cut since launch

Crypto.com has spent more on regulatory permissions than almost any competitor: MiCA authorisation in the EU, FCA registration in the UK, MAS licensing in Singapore, and registrations across the Middle East, Australia and parts of the Americas. For a consumer platform that is a real advantage — it can operate legally where offshore venues cannot, with local fiat rails and consumer protections that actually attach.

Two products, two very different prices

The app and the exchange are separate products with separate economics. The app quotes an all-in price that embeds a spread, typically well above 0.5% and considerably worse on smaller assets. The Crypto.com Exchange runs a maker-taker schedule that is competitive with Binance and OKX at equivalent volume. Users who buy in the app because it is easier are paying several times more than users who trade on the exchange with the same funds in the same company. That gap is the single most consequential thing to understand about this platform.

Cards and rewards: read the current tiers

The Visa card programme built the brand, and it has been repriced repeatedly since launch. Cashback rates at each staking tier have been reduced, subscription rebates trimmed or removed, and the CRO stake required for the higher tiers is substantial. The rewards are still real; they are materially less than the ones people remember, and any advertised tier should be checked against the current terms rather than a review from a prior cycle. Staking a five-figure sum in CRO to raise cashback is a leveraged position in CRO, and should be priced as one.

Security and custody

Crypto.com holds the majority of assets in cold storage with institutional custody arrangements and third-party insurance on a portion of holdings, and maintains SOC 2 examinations. In January 2022 an incident saw roughly $34m withdrawn from around 500 accounts through a two-factor authentication bypass; all affected users were reimbursed and the authentication system was rebuilt. Its handling was prompt, and the underlying weakness was a genuine failure of account security design.

Who should use Crypto.com

Users who want one regulated app for buying, spending and earning, in a country where the offshore venues cannot legally operate. Use the exchange rather than the app for anything above a token amount, treat the card tiers as a CRO investment decision, and check current reward terms before committing capital to reach a tier.

FAQ

Is the Crypto.com app expensive?
Yes — it embeds a spread typically well above 0.5%, and worse on smaller assets. The Crypto.com Exchange, run by the same company, charges competitive maker-taker fees for the same trade.
Is Crypto.com regulated?
It holds more major-market licences than most competitors, including MiCA authorisation in the EU, FCA registration in the UK and MAS licensing in Singapore.
Is the Crypto.com card still worth it?
The base tiers are reasonable; the headline rates require locking substantial CRO, and rewards have been cut several times since launch. Evaluate the staked amount as an investment in CRO, not as a card feature.
Has Crypto.com been hacked?
In January 2022 about $34m was withdrawn from roughly 500 accounts via a two-factor authentication bypass. All affected users were reimbursed and the authentication system was rebuilt.
