Comparing two DeFi protocols is harder than it should be because each reports different things differently. Messari built a normalisation layer: consistent definitions of revenue, fees, supply and unlocks, applied across hundreds of assets, so a like-for-like comparison actually means something.
What you get
Standardised protocol metrics, quarterly state-of-network reports with consistent formats, governance and unlock tracking, and a research library. The unlock and token-supply work is particularly practical: knowing what proportion of supply is scheduled to hit the market in the next quarter is a first-order input that most dashboards obscure.
The commissioning question
Some Messari research is funded by the protocols it covers, labelled as such. Disclosure is the right practice and it does not neutralise the incentive: a report paid for by its subject will differ in emphasis from one that is not, however honest the analyst. Read commissioned reports for the data and discount the framing.
Cost
Free access covers basic profiles and some research. Professional tiers are priced for institutions and run well above what an individual will justify, which is the main reason this scores 6.5 on value.
Who should use Messari
Funds, treasuries and research teams that need comparable fundamentals and formal reporting. Individuals will find DefiLlama covers the metrics and Dune covers the custom questions, free.
