Layer-1 networks
A layer 1 is a blockchain that settles its own transactions and secures itself, rather than borrowing security from another chain. Its native asset pays fees and, under proof of stake, is the collateral behind the network's security budget.
What separates one from another is rarely throughput claims. It is the security budget, the validator distribution, the supply schedule, and whether anything of consequence is actually built on it.
