What Aptos does
Aptos is a proof-of-stake layer 1 blockchain built by former Meta employees who worked on the ill-fated Diem (formerly Libra) stablecoin project. When regulators killed Diem in 2022, the team took the Move programming language they'd built for it and launched Aptos as a standalone chain, promising high throughput, low fees and a resource-oriented smart contract model designed to prevent the kind of asset-duplication bugs that plague Solidity.
The chain uses Block-STM, a parallel execution engine that processes transactions concurrently rather than one at a time, and claims theoretical throughput in the tens of thousands of transactions per second, though real-world sustained usage has run far lower. Aptos Labs, the main development company, has leaned hard into enterprise and payments partnerships — deals with Microsoft, Google Cloud, and various fintech and stablecoin issuers form the backbone of its go-to-market pitch, positioning Aptos as infrastructure for banks and payment processors rather than just another DeFi playground.
Where APT fits in
APT is the native gas and staking token, used to pay transaction fees and secure the network through delegated proof-of-stake. Token unlocks have been a persistent overhang: a large share of supply sits with the core team, Aptos Labs and early investors, released on a vesting schedule that has repeatedly weighed on price as new tokens hit the market.
Risks worth knowing
Aptos competes in an increasingly crowded field of 'Solana killer' layer 1s — Sui, Sei, Monad and others are chasing the same high-throughput, low-latency niche, and none has yet demonstrated a clear, durable edge in real usage. Move is a genuinely interesting language, but developer mindshare still lags Solidity and Rust by a wide margin, and Aptos's DeFi and application ecosystem remains thin relative to its market capitalisation. The heavy token concentration among insiders is worth watching closely: continued unlocks mean sell pressure isn't going away soon, and enterprise partnership announcements have a habit of generating headlines without generating on-chain activity.
