BNB started life in 2017 as an ERC-20 token sold to fund the launch of Binance, the exchange that would go on to become crypto's largest by trading volume. It has since migrated to its own blockchain and become one of the few tokens whose value is inseparable from a single company's commercial fortunes.

What it does

BNB's original utility was simple: hold it, get a discount on Binance trading fees. That's expanded considerably since. BNB now serves as the gas token for BNB Chain (formerly Binance Smart Chain), an EVM-compatible network that hosts its own DeFi, gaming and NFT ecosystem, largely by offering far lower fees than Ethereum. Binance also runs a quarterly burn mechanism, permanently destroying BNB tied to platform activity, which is designed to reduce total supply over time toward a long-term cap.

The token's use cases have grown beyond the exchange itself — Binance Launchpad token sales, BNB Chain gas, and payment integrations across Binance's broader product suite — but the throughline remains the same: BNB's value is tightly coupled to Binance's business performance and regulatory standing.

Risks

That coupling is the central risk. Binance pleaded guilty in November 2023 to violating US anti-money-laundering and sanctions laws, paying over $4 billion in penalties, and founder Changpeng Zhao served time and stepped down as CEO — events that briefly rattled BNB but didn't dent its market position. BNB Chain itself runs on a smaller validator set than Ethereum, historically around 41-45 active validators chosen via a delegated proof-of-stake system, which trades decentralization for speed and cost. Ongoing regulatory pressure on Binance in multiple jurisdictions, plus BNB Chain's exposure to periodic bridge exploits and smart contract hacks common to EVM chains, remain live concerns for holders.

BNB endures largely because Binance itself remains dominant, but that's also precisely why it's one of the more centralization-exposed large-cap tokens in the market.

FAQ

What's the difference between BNB the token and BNB Chain the network?
BNB is the token; BNB Chain is the EVM-compatible blockchain that uses BNB as its gas currency. The token predates the chain — it launched as an Ethereum-based fundraising token before Binance built its own network.
How does the BNB burn mechanism work?
Binance conducts quarterly burns, permanently removing BNB from circulation based on trading volume and other metrics, with the stated goal of eventually reducing total supply toward 100 million tokens from the original 200 million.
Did Binance's 2023 US settlement affect BNB directly?
Binance the company paid over $4 billion in penalties and CZ stepped down as CEO, but Binance continued operating and BNB's price recovered within months, showing the market treated it as a corporate legal issue rather than an existential threat.
Is BNB Chain more centralized than Ethereum?
Yes, structurally. BNB Chain relies on a much smaller set of validators than Ethereum's tens of thousands, which delivers lower fees and faster blocks but concentrates more trust in fewer parties.
