Zcash (ZEC) launched in October 2016 as one of the first cryptocurrencies to implement zero-knowledge proofs at protocol level. Built by Zooko Wilcox and a team of cryptographers on a forked Bitcoin codebase, its defining feature is zk-SNARKs - a form of zero-knowledge cryptography that lets the network verify a transaction is valid without revealing its sender, receiver, or amount.
How Zcash's privacy works
Zcash offers a choice most privacy coins don't: transactions can be transparent (t-addresses, functioning much like Bitcoin) or shielded (z-addresses, hiding all transaction details via zk-SNARKs). That optionality was originally a performance trade-off - early shielded transactions were slow and computationally heavy - but successive upgrades have narrowed the gap. Sapling (2018) made shielded transactions dramatically faster and cheaper, and the 2022 Network Upgrade 5 introduced the Orchard shielded pool built on Halo 2, removing the need for a trusted setup ceremony that had dogged the original Sprout pool since launch.
Development is split between the Electric Coin Company, which builds the software, and the Zcash Foundation, which stewards the protocol and funds public-good research; both draw funding from a block-reward "Dev Fund" that continues to allocate roughly 20% of newly mined ZEC to development, a structure that has periodically drawn criticism as a form of centralised pre-mine.
Risks worth knowing
Zcash's optional privacy is both its selling point and its weakness. Because shielded transactions have historically made up a minority of on-chain activity, the anonymity set for anyone using the shielded pool is smaller than it would be if privacy were mandatory, as with Monero - fewer shielded users means less cover for any individual transaction. Regulatory pressure on privacy-preserving assets has also intensified: several exchanges have delisted or restricted ZEC in response to anti-money-laundering rules and, in the EU, MiCA's tightening stance on privacy coins, and that trend shows no sign of reversing. The Dev Fund structure also means a meaningful share of new supply flows to insiders rather than miners alone, a design choice not every holder is comfortable with.
Zcash remains a technically serious project with a legitimate claim to pioneering zero-knowledge privacy in crypto, but its real-world privacy guarantees depend heavily on adoption of the shielded pool it makes optional.
