What World Liberty Financial is
World Liberty Financial (WLF) is a decentralised finance platform launched in 2024 with Donald Trump and his sons publicly attached as promoters, and an entity called DT Marks DEFI LLC — controlled by the Trump family — entitled to a cut of platform revenue. It offers a lending and borrowing protocol and, more significantly, issues USD1, a dollar-pegged stablecoin backed by short-dated US Treasuries and cash equivalents held with custodians including BitGo.
WLFI, the project's governance token, was sold in a private presale in October 2024 and was originally non-transferable — holders could vote but not trade. That changed in 2025 when the token began trading on major exchanges, instantly turning a politically-adjacent venture into a liquid, speculatively-traded asset.
USD1 has been the more consequential product commercially. It was the settlement currency in a widely reported $2 billion investment that Abu Dhabi-based MGX made into Binance, and it has been integrated across several exchanges chasing stablecoin market share against Tether and Circle.
Risks
The obvious risk is conflict of interest: a sitting president's family stands to profit directly from a token whose value is partly a function of political proximity, and foreign entities have used the project to route large sums through a Trump-linked vehicle while Trump held office — a dynamic ethics watchdogs and Democratic lawmakers have criticised heavily. Beyond the politics, WLFI carries standard governance-token risks — concentrated allocation to insiders, thin trading history, and value that depends on continued platform adoption rather than cash flow rights. USD1's peg depends on Treasury custody and redemption processes that, unlike Circle's USDC, haven't yet been tested through a full market-stress cycle.
