What VeChain does
VeChain is a layer 1 blockchain purpose-built for supply chain tracking, product provenance and enterprise data verification, running since mainnet launch in 2018. Its pitch has always been unglamorous compared with DeFi or gaming chains: give brands, logistics firms and regulators a tamper-evident way to record where a product came from, how it was handled, and whether it's genuine. VeChain pairs its VET token with VTHO, a separate gas token generated by holding VET, a dual-token design meant to decouple network usage costs from VET's market price so businesses can predict transaction fees.
Where it fits in
VeChain's differentiator has always been enterprise partnerships rather than DeFi composability — deployments with names like Walmart China, BMW and DHL feeding real supply chain data onto the chain, spanning food safety, automotive parts tracking and luxury goods authentication across more than two dozen countries. That's a genuinely different adoption model from most layer 1s chasing developer mindshare, though it has also meant VeChain moves slower and generates less onchain financial activity than its market cap peers.
The Hayabusa upgrade, completed in December 2025, marked the biggest structural change in VeChain's history: consensus moved from a permissioned proof-of-authority model run by a whitelisted set of authority masternodes to a public, permissionless delegated proof-of-stake system through the new StarGate staking platform. That shift raises the validator staking cap to 600 million VET and introduces a delegator function so smaller holders can participate in staking rather than relying entirely on approved node operators, addressing one of the longest-standing criticisms of VeChain's governance model.
Risks worth knowing
VeChain's enterprise focus is a double-edged sword: real-world partnerships generate headlines and legitimacy, but converting supply chain pilots into recurring onchain revenue has been slow, and VET's price has historically tracked broader crypto sentiment more than actual enterprise usage. The Hayabusa transition to permissionless DPoS is still young, and decentralising consensus after years of centralised authority-node control carries execution risk — new validator sets need to prove security and censorship resistance under real conditions. VeChain also competes with far larger, more liquid smart contract platforms for developer attention, and its enterprise-first positioning has yet to translate into the kind of DeFi or NFT activity that drives fee revenue on competing chains.
