About USD1

All assets →

USD1 is a fiat-backed stablecoin issued by World Liberty Financial (WLFI), the decentralised finance project publicly tied to Donald Trump and his family, launched in 2025 with backing said to consist of US Treasuries, dollar deposits and cash equivalents held with regulated custodians.

What it does

USD1 works like most reserve-backed stablecoins: it's minted 1:1 against dollar-denominated reserves, redeemable through World Liberty Financial's platform, and pitched as a payments and settlement rail for both retail users and, notably, institutional and sovereign counterparties. It launched across multiple chains, including Ethereum and BNB Chain, aiming for broad DeFi integration rather than staying siloed.

The stablecoin got an unusual amount of attention almost immediately because of who's behind it. An Abu Dhabi-based investment firm, MGX, used USD1 to settle a multi-billion-dollar investment into Binance in 2025 — a transaction that put a Trump-linked token at the centre of a major cross-border institutional deal within months of launch, and handed USD1 real, non-trivial liquidity almost overnight.

World Liberty Financial has positioned USD1 as central to its broader product suite alongside its WLFI governance token, aiming to build a full DeFi ecosystem — lending, trading, payments — with USD1 as the settlement layer underneath it.

Risks

The conflict-of-interest problem here is not subtle. A stablecoin tied to a sitting or former president's family, gaining adoption partly through deals involving foreign sovereign-linked capital, raises exactly the kind of regulatory and ethical questions that stablecoin legislation like the GENIUS Act was meant to address — and critics, including sitting members of Congress, have said so explicitly.

Reserve transparency is the standard stablecoin risk, and it applies here too: USD1's value depends entirely on WLFI's custodians actually holding what they claim, audited on a schedule investors can trust, rather than on any code-enforced collateralisation the way crypto-backed stablecoins offer.

There's also concentration and reputational risk baked into the model — USD1's growth has leaned heavily on a small number of very large, headline-grabbing transactions rather than broad organic retail and merchant adoption, which makes its liquidity and usage figures unusually dependent on relationships rather than product-market fit.
