What The Sandbox is
The Sandbox is a voxel-based virtual world built on Ethereum where users buy LAND parcels as NFTs, build games and experiences with a no-code VoxEdit and Game Maker toolset, and trade user-generated assets through a marketplace. SAND is the ecosystem's utility and governance token: it's used to buy LAND and in-world assets, pay transaction fees, stake for rewards, and vote through the Sandbox DAO on platform decisions. Backed by Animoca Brands and Softbank's Vision Fund among others, the project raised roughly $300 million over its life and signed partnership deals with a long list of brands and franchises wanting a foothold in the metaverse land grab.
The platform peaked during the 2021-22 NFT and metaverse mania, when LAND parcels traded for tens of thousands of dollars each on the promise of an open, user-owned virtual world rivalling centralised platforms like Roblox or Fortnite. That promise drove SAND to a market capitalisation in the billions and made it one of the most recognisable gaming tokens in crypto.
Where it stands now
The metaverse thesis has not played out as pitched. Daily active users have fallen to a small fraction of what the platform claims as its registered base, and SAND trades close to 90% below its all-time high. In 2025, Animoca Brands took full operational control of The Sandbox, with co-founders Sebastien Borget and Arthur Madrid stepping back from executive roles — Borget staying on as a public ambassador, Madrid moving to non-executive chairman — while the company cut roughly half its 250-person staff and closed several international offices. Animoca is reportedly eyeing the platform's remaining treasury, estimated in the low hundreds of millions of dollars, as a strategic asset ahead of a possible Hong Kong IPO, and has signalled interest in pivoting toward broader Web3 products, including a rumoured memecoin launchpad.
Risks worth knowing
This is a project in visible retrenchment: a founder exit, a mass layoff, and a strategic pivot away from the original metaverse vision are not signs of a platform executing on its roadmap as planned. LAND and in-world asset values have collapsed alongside user activity, and SAND's utility is directly tied to a platform whose core product-market fit is now in serious question. Anyone holding SAND is making a bet on Animoca successfully repositioning the business, not on the original open-metaverse thesis that drove its 2021 valuation.
The bottom line
The Sandbox is a cautionary tale of the metaverse cycle: real brand partnerships and genuine early hype gave way to collapsing engagement, and the token today reflects a platform being restructured for survival rather than a growing virtual world.
