Starknet is a zero-knowledge rollup scaling Ethereum, built by StarkWare, the team that pioneered STARK proofs — a cryptographic technique for compressing large batches of transactions into succinct proofs verified on Ethereum's base layer. Unlike most rollups that reuse Solidity and the EVM, Starknet runs on Cairo, a purpose-built programming language designed specifically for provable computation, which gives it technical differentiation at the cost of a steeper learning curve for developers migrating from Ethereum.
What it does
Starknet batches thousands of off-chain transactions and posts a single validity proof to Ethereum, inheriting Ethereum's security while dramatically cutting gas costs and increasing throughput compared with executing everything on layer 1. STRK is used to pay transaction fees on the network and for staking within its decentralisation roadmap, which has been progressively handing block production and proving duties from StarkWare-run infrastructure to a wider, permissionless validator set. The network has also rolled out account abstraction natively rather than bolting it on, letting wallets support features like social recovery and gas payment in tokens other than ETH from day one.
Starknet's ecosystem spans DeFi, gaming and on-chain applications that specifically benefit from cheap, high-throughput execution, and its STARK-based proving technology is also licensed and used by other projects beyond Starknet itself, giving StarkWare a broader commercial footprint than the rollup alone.
Risks
Cairo's novelty cuts both ways: it enables provable computation Solidity struggles with, but it also means a smaller developer pool, less battle-tested tooling, and a genuine migration cost for teams used to the EVM. Starknet's decentralisation has trailed its technical ambitions — for a meaningful stretch after launch, sequencing and proving were run by StarkWare-controlled infrastructure, and the transition to a fully permissionless, staked validator set has been a multi-year rollout rather than a day-one feature, which matters for anyone assessing censorship resistance today rather than on the roadmap.
STRK's token distribution drew criticism at points for large allocations to the core team and investors relative to community incentives, and unlock schedules for those allocations create ongoing sell-pressure dynamics worth tracking. As with any rollup, Starknet's security ultimately depends on Ethereum settlement working correctly and on StarkWare's proving system being implemented without critical bugs — a validity proof is only as trustworthy as the code that generates and verifies it.
