Solana launched in 2020 promising what few other layer-1s could: thousands of transactions per second at fractions of a cent, achieved through a design that pairs proof-of-stake with Proof of History, a cryptographic clock that lets validators order transactions without waiting on round-trip communication. That speed has made Solana the default venue for high-frequency retail activity in crypto, for better and worse.
What it does
Solana's Sealevel runtime executes non-overlapping transactions in parallel rather than one at a time, giving it a genuine throughput edge over Ethereum-style sequential execution. That's translated into dominance in specific niches: Solana is now the primary chain for memecoin launches via platforms like pump.fun, hosts significant DeFi volume through protocols like Jupiter and Raydium, and has attracted DePIN (decentralized physical infrastructure) projects that need cheap, frequent on-chain writes. The rollout of the Firedancer validator client, built independently by Jump Crypto, has been aimed squarely at improving the network's historically shaky reliability.
Solana's early backing from Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX and Alameda Research nearly sank the token's reputation when FTX collapsed in late 2022, sending SOL down more than 90% from its highs — a fall it has since more than recovered from as the ecosystem rebuilt independently of its original backers.
Risks
Solana's reliability record remains a legitimate concern: the network suffered multiple full outages between 2021 and 2022, and while stability has improved significantly since, the memory of hours-long downtime during periods of peak demand hasn't fully faded. Running a competitive validator requires substantial hardware, which concentrates influence among well-resourced operators more than Ethereum's broader validator set. Bot-driven spam transactions, often tied to memecoin trading, have periodically clogged the network for ordinary users. And Solana faces intensifying competition not just from Ethereum's L1 but from Ethereum's own L2 ecosystem, which now offers comparable fees with a different security model.
Solana's bet is that raw performance wins users regardless of architecture purity — a bet that's paid off in usage numbers even as the reliability and centralization questions remain unresolved.
