What EUR CoinVertible is

EUR CoinVertible, EURCV, is a euro-pegged stablecoin issued by Société Générale-FORGE, the digital-assets subsidiary of French banking giant Société Générale. Launched in April 2023, EURCV was one of the first stablecoins issued directly by a major traditional bank rather than a crypto-native firm, and it was built specifically with the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation (MiCA) in mind well before that framework's stablecoin provisions took effect in mid-2024.

SG-FORGE holds an electronic money institution (EMI) licence and issues EURCV as an e-money token, with reserves held 100% in cash and published for daily review on the issuer's website. The token launched on Ethereum and has since expanded to a genuinely multichain footprint, with deployments on Solana, the XRP Ledger and Stellar, alongside a sibling US-dollar token, USDCV.

Distribution and market-making

For its first year, EURCV was largely restricted to whitelisted institutional counterparties, limiting its usefulness as a general-purpose on-chain euro. SG-FORGE has since worked to open that up: removing whitelisting restrictions to make the token freely transferable, and bringing in market makers Flowdesk and Wintermute to deepen liquidity and tighten spreads. Retail access has also grown through exchange listings, including at Bitvavo.

Why it matters

EURCV matters less for its current trading volume, which remains modest, than for what it signals: a systemically important bank building fully regulated, on-chain euro infrastructure rather than leaving that ground to crypto-native issuers like Circle. As MiCA reshapes which stablecoins can legally circulate and be marketed within the EU, bank-issued, fully compliant tokens like EURCV are positioned to benefit from a regulatory environment that increasingly disadvantages offshore, less transparent alternatives.

Risks

EURCV's institutional pedigree cuts both ways. It's about as close to bank-grade as a stablecoin gets, but that also means it inherits traditional banking risk: reliance on Société Générale's own balance sheet and reputation, and exposure to French and EU regulatory shifts. Liquidity remains thin compared with dollar-denominated giants, and EURCV competes in a still-small euro-stablecoin niche against the likes of Circle's EURC, making network effects harder to win than in the dollar market.
