Shiba Inu (SHIB) launched in August 2020 as an anonymous, self-described 'Dogecoin killer' — an ERC-20 meme token created by a pseudonymous figure known as Ryoshi, with no venture funding, no roadmap, and an initial supply of one quadrillion tokens, half of which were sent to Vitalik Buterin as a publicity stunt. Buterin burned most of his allocation and donated the rest to Covid-relief charities in 2021, an event that briefly made SHIB's price move on nothing but that single wallet's actions.
What it does
Unlike most meme coins, SHIB's team built out actual infrastructure around the token: ShibaSwap, a decentralised exchange with its own liquidity incentives; Shibarium, an Ethereum layer-2 that launched in 2023 to give the ecosystem cheaper transactions and a home for its companion tokens (BONE for governance and gas, LEASH as a smaller-supply asset); and a persistent, if slow, token-burn mechanism that routes a portion of ecosystem fees toward permanently removing SHIB from circulation.
SHIB's practical use is overwhelmingly speculative and cultural: it trades on meme momentum, social media attention and its enormous, famously loyal retail holder base — the self-styled 'Shib Army' — rather than on cash flows, protocol revenue or institutional demand. Its market capitalisation has, at various points, exceeded that of established companies purely on retail enthusiasm and low per-token price psychology.
Risks
SHIB's supply is vast even after burns — trillions of tokens remain in circulation — and the burn rate has never come close to meaningfully denting that figure at scale, despite periodic viral 'burn portal' campaigns. Shibarium has suffered technical stumbles, including a 2024 bridge exploit that drained several million dollars, raising questions about the security rigour behind the ecosystem's expansion.
More fundamentally, SHIB has no cash-flow-generating business model, no enforceable rights attached to the token, and a price history dominated by Elon Musk tweets, Dogecoin correlation and broader risk-appetite cycles rather than fundamentals — anyone buying it is buying pure attention and liquidity, full stop.
