What PancakeSwap does

PancakeSwap is an automated market maker decentralised exchange originally launched on BNB Chain in 2020, riding the wave of users priced out of Ethereum's gas fees during DeFi summer. It works on the same core AMM principle as Uniswap — liquidity providers deposit paired tokens into pools, traders swap against those pools, and fees flow back to the providers — but wrapped it in a distinctly playful brand and layered on features well beyond simple swaps.

Beyond spot trading, PancakeSwap runs yield farms, staking pools ('Syrup Pools'), a lottery, NFT marketplace, prediction markets, and perpetual futures trading, all under one roof. It has since expanded well past BNB Chain to Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, zkSync and several other networks, and it upgraded its AMM to a concentrated-liquidity model similar to Uniswap v3, letting liquidity providers concentrate capital around current prices for better fee efficiency.

Where CAKE fits in

CAKE is PancakeSwap's governance and utility token, used to vote on protocol decisions, boost yield farm rewards, and participate in the platform's various gamified features. The protocol has run an aggressive, multi-pronged token burn programme funded by trading fees, lottery revenue and other protocol income, aimed at controlling CAKE's supply after early emissions were criticised as excessive and inflationary.

Risks worth knowing

PancakeSwap's biggest structural exposure is its roots in BNB Chain, a network controlled and heavily influenced by Binance — regulatory action against Binance or a loss of confidence in BNB Chain would likely hit PancakeSwap's core liquidity base hard, even with its multi-chain expansion. CAKE's early tokenomics were genuinely inflationary before the burn programme kicked in, and the sprawling feature set — lottery, NFTs, prediction markets — has diluted focus at times and adds attack surface, with the protocol having faced its share of smaller exploits and front-end issues over the years. Competing head-on with Uniswap on nearly every chain it operates on also means PancakeSwap rarely enjoys a clean liquidity moat outside BNB Chain.

FAQ

Is PancakeSwap only on BNB Chain?
No, though BNB Chain remains its home base and biggest liquidity source. PancakeSwap has expanded to Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, zkSync and several other networks over time.
What is CAKE used for?
CAKE is PancakeSwap's governance token, used to vote on protocol proposals, boost rewards in yield farms, and participate in platform features like staking pools, the lottery and prediction markets.
Why does PancakeSwap burn CAKE tokens?
Early CAKE emissions were criticised as overly inflationary, so PancakeSwap introduced a multi-source burn programme funded by trading fees, lottery proceeds and other protocol revenue to reduce circulating supply and offset new issuance.
How is PancakeSwap different from Uniswap?
Both use an automated market maker model with concentrated liquidity options, but PancakeSwap layers on additional gamified features — a lottery, NFT marketplace, prediction markets and Syrup staking pools — that go beyond Uniswap's more minimal swap-and-liquidity focus.
