What NEO does

NEO launched originally as Antshares in 2014, founded by Da Hongfei and Erik Zhang, and rebranded to NEO in 2017 as one of the earliest non-Ethereum smart contract platforms. Its distinguishing technical choice was language flexibility: developers can write smart contracts in C#, Python, Java or Go rather than a bespoke language, compiled to run on NEO's own NeoVM. The network runs a dual-token model — NEO itself is a fixed-supply, non-divisible governance token capped at 100 million units, and holding it generates GAS, the separate token actually spent on transaction fees and network resources.

Consensus runs on delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (dBFT), where a limited, elected set of consensus nodes validate blocks and finalise transactions quickly, in contrast to proof-of-work chains that finalise probabilistically over many blocks. That speed comes with a trade-off: dBFT concentrates block validation among a smaller, more identifiable group of nodes than networks like Ethereum or Solana rely on.

The NEO N3 mainnet upgrade in 2021 improved scalability, added native oracle support, introduced NeoFS decentralised storage, and expanded cross-chain interoperability via Poly Network, aiming to reposition NEO as infrastructure for what its foundation calls a "smart economy" spanning digital assets, digital identity and automated contracts.

Risks

NEO's early identity as "China's Ethereum" became a liability once Chinese regulators moved to ban crypto trading and ICOs in 2017, followed by mining and exchange restrictions from 2021 onward — even though the NEO Foundation and its ecosystem operate internationally, the association has weighed on sentiment and limited its addressable user base within China itself. Developer activity and ecosystem total value locked have never matched Ethereum-tier competitors, and much of NEO's ecosystem momentum peaked years ago during the 2017–18 cycle.

The dBFT consensus model's smaller, elected validator set is a genuine centralisation trade-off worth weighing seriously against its speed benefits, and NEO faces stiff, ongoing competition from newer layer-1s with larger developer communities, deeper liquidity and more active venture backing.

FAQ

What is the difference between NEO and GAS?
NEO is the fixed-supply, non-divisible governance token; GAS is a separate token generated by holding NEO, and it's what's actually spent to pay for transactions and smart contract execution on the network.
Is NEO decentralised?
NEO uses dBFT consensus with a limited, elected set of consensus nodes, which delivers faster finality than proof-of-work but is more centralised than networks with larger, permissionless validator sets.
Why is NEO called 'the Chinese Ethereum'?
The label stems from NEO's Shanghai origins and predominantly Chinese founding team and early userbase, though the project and its foundation operate internationally and reject exclusive ties to China's government.
What changed with the NEO N3 upgrade?
N3, launched in 2021, added native oracle support, NeoFS decentralised storage, improved scalability, and cross-chain interoperability via Poly Network, repositioning NEO as broader 'smart economy' infrastructure.
