NEAR Protocol is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain launched in 2020 by former Microsoft and MemSQL engineers Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov, built around Nightshade, a sharding design meant to split network load across multiple shards that produce a single unified block, rather than the more common approach of fully separate shard chains. The goal has always been horizontal scalability without sacrificing the single-state simplicity developers get on a chain like Ethereum.
What it does
NEAR uses human-readable account names instead of Ethereum-style hex addresses, and its smart contracts are written in Rust or JavaScript/TypeScript rather than a bespoke language — a deliberate choice to lower the barrier for web developers. Doomslug, its finality mechanism, gives roughly one-block finality under normal conditions. Beyond the base chain, NEAR operates the Aurora EVM-compatible layer for Ethereum-native dApps and Rainbow Bridge for cross-chain asset transfers.
Since 2024, NEAR has repositioned hard around artificial intelligence, branding itself the 'blockchain for AI' with a thesis built on user-owned data, verifiable AI agent execution, and infrastructure — including its NEAR AI research arm — for running and paying AI agents on-chain. It's a pivot that mirrors a wider industry trend of layer-1s chasing whichever narrative, DeFi, NFTs, gaming, now AI, currently commands attention and capital.
NEAR the token pays gas, with a portion burned per transaction, secures the network via staking, and funds the protocol's treasury and ecosystem grants through NEAR Foundation allocations.
Risks
NEAR's AI pivot is more narrative and infrastructure grant-making than proven product-market fit so far — 'AI blockchain' is a crowded, largely unproven category, and it's not obvious a general-purpose L1 has a durable edge over dedicated AI-compute or agent-payment infrastructure. The chain also faces the same competitive pressure as every other sharded or high-throughput L1: Solana, Avalanche, Sui and others are chasing overlapping developer and liquidity pools.
Token unlocks from early investor and foundation allocations remain a recurring supply overhang, and NEAR's DeFi and NFT ecosystem, while real, never reached the depth of Solana's or Ethereum's despite years of comparable age.
