Monero (XMR) launched in April 2014 as a fork of Bytecoin, the original implementation of the CryptoNote protocol, after community members grew suspicious that Bytecoin's founders had secretly pre-mined a huge share of its supply. Monero rebuilt from that CryptoNote foundation with one guiding principle: privacy shouldn't be optional.
How Monero's privacy works
Every Monero transaction is private by default, with no transparent option. Ring signatures obscure the true sender among a group of decoys, stealth addresses generate a unique one-time destination for every payment, and Ring Confidential Transactions (RingCT), added in 2017, hide the transaction amount as well. Bulletproofs, introduced in 2018 and later upgraded to Bulletproofs+, shrank the size and cost of these proofs considerably. Because privacy is mandatory rather than opt-in, every Monero user contributes to the anonymity set of every other user - a structural advantage over privacy coins that make shielding optional.
Monero also runs on RandomX, a proof-of-work algorithm optimised for ordinary CPUs and deliberately resistant to specialised mining hardware, reinforcing a long-standing commitment to keeping mining accessible and decentralised. The protocol schedules regular hard forks roughly twice a year, partly to stay ahead of ASIC development and partly to keep shipping privacy and efficiency upgrades. Supply has no hard cap: after the main emission curve tapers off, a small "tail emission" of 0.6 XMR per block continues indefinitely, ensuring miners keep getting paid to secure the network long-term.
Risks worth knowing
Monero's uncompromising privacy is precisely what's driving it out of the regulated exchange ecosystem. Under mounting pressure from financial crime rules and, in the EU, MiCA's restrictions on privacy-preserving assets, exchanges including Kraken (in parts of Europe), Binance, and others have delisted XMR, materially shrinking where it can be bought or sold through regulated venues. The U.S. Internal Revenue Service has also publicly offered bounties for tools capable of tracing Monero transactions, and while claims of successful deanonymisation exist, they remain disputed and unproven at scale. That combination - genuinely strong privacy but shrinking legitimate market access - is Monero's central tension going forward.
For anyone who considers financial privacy a core crypto value, Monero remains the most technically committed option on the market; for anyone weighing liquidity and exchange access, that same commitment is now its biggest practical drawback.
