What Kite does
Kite is an EVM-compatible layer-1 blockchain built around a specific premise: that AI agents acting autonomously — booking services, buying data, paying other agents for compute or information — need payment and identity infrastructure designed for machines rather than retrofitted from human-facing crypto rails. The network's core pitch is verifiable agent identity, programmable spending permissions, and stablecoin-native payments that let an AI agent transact within limits a human owner has set, without needing to sign every transaction manually.
The identity layer is the more distinctive piece: Kite aims to let each agent carry a cryptographically verifiable identity separate from its human operator, so counterparties (human or machine) can check who or what they're actually dealing with, and owners can revoke or constrain an agent's ability to spend if it misbehaves or gets compromised. That's a real gap in existing crypto infrastructure, where a wallet's private key grants essentially unlimited authority with no built-in concept of delegated, bounded permission.
KITE is the network's native token, used for gas, staking and governance as the chain matures, with the project backed by venture investors including PayPal Ventures — a notable signal given PayPal's own stablecoin and payments ambitions. Kite sits within the broader 'agentic commerce' and machine-payments narrative that picked up steam through 2024–25 as AI agents moved from chatbots toward tools capable of taking real-world, transactional actions.
Risks
This is a thesis-stage infrastructure bet, not a proven network with entrenched usage. The core question — whether AI agents actually need a dedicated blockchain for payments, rather than existing stablecoin rails, API-based payment processors, or permissioned systems run by the AI platforms themselves — is genuinely unresolved, and plenty of well-funded 'agentic payments' projects are chasing the same narrow use case simultaneously.
Adoption depends on AI agent platforms and developers actually choosing to build on Kite specifically, rather than treating agent payments as a feature bolted onto existing chains or centralised processors. As with most early-stage layer-1s, token unlock schedules, validator decentralisation, and real (as opposed to incentivised) transaction volume are worth checking closely before treating the AI-agent narrative as a substitute for on-chain fundamentals.
