JUP is the governance token of Jupiter, the dominant swap aggregator on Solana that routes trades across the chain's decentralised exchanges to find the best price, and has since expanded into perpetuals, limit orders, dollar-cost averaging and a mobile trading app.
What it does
Jupiter launched in 2021 under pseudonymous founder 'Meow' and grew into Solana's default trading front-end, aggregating liquidity from dozens of DEXs so users get better execution than trading on any single venue directly. In January 2024, Jupiter distributed JUP through one of the largest airdrops in Solana's history, reaching hundreds of thousands of wallets, and has continued rewarding active users and long-term stakers through its Active Staker Rewards programme.
JUP holders vote through the Jupiter DAO on treasury use, ecosystem grants and protocol direction, and staking JUP earns a share of platform revenue, funded partly through weekly buy-backs of JUP using trading fees. Beyond the core swap product, Jupiter has pushed into a perpetuals exchange, a launchpad for new tokens, and liquid staking, positioning itself as Solana's broadest retail trading hub rather than a single-purpose aggregator.
Risks
Jupiter's revenue is heavily tied to Solana's trading volume, and a meaningful share of that volume in recent cycles has come from meme-coin frenzies — great for fee income during a bull run, a real drag if that speculative activity cools. The protocol also weathered a genuine governance controversy in 2024 when a co-founder departed amid a token-launch trading scandal, a reminder that centralised decision-making persists behind the DAO branding.
Aggregating liquidity across dozens of underlying DEXs and protocols widens the attack surface relative to a single, audited AMM, and large scheduled token unlocks for team and early backers have historically weighed on JUP's price as vesting cliffs hit. Solana itself has a history of network congestion and past outages, which directly degrades Jupiter's product during exactly the high-volume moments when it matters most.
