What IOTA does

IOTA was built around the Tangle, a directed acyclic graph (DAG) structure rather than a traditional blockchain, with the pitch that transactions confirm each other by referencing prior ones rather than relying on miners or a single sequential chain. The original design goal was feeless microtransactions suited to machine-to-machine payments and IoT data integrity — sensors, supply chain devices and industrial hardware transacting value or logging data without transaction fees eating into tiny payments. For years the network relied on a centralised Coordinator node run by the IOTA Foundation to prevent attacks, an admitted trade-off against the decentralisation blockchain purists expected.

IOTA has since rebuilt substantially. The Coordicide upgrade removed the Coordinator to move toward genuine decentralisation, and more recently the project launched IOTA Rebased, a full smart contract layer built using the Move programming language — the same language underpinning Aptos and Sui — replacing the DAG-only architecture with a more conventional, EVM- and Move-compatible execution environment aimed at attracting DeFi and general-purpose developers the original Tangle never captured.

What the IOTA token does

IOTA is the network's native asset, used to pay transaction and smart contract fees on the rebuilt chain, secure the network through staking under the new proof-of-stake validator set, and serve as the settlement asset for the ecosystem's DeFi and tokenisation applications, including partnerships targeting real-world asset tokenisation and enterprise data integrity use cases.

Risks

IOTA has repeatedly rebuilt core architecture — from Coordinator-dependent Tangle to Coordicide to the Move-based Rebased chain — which speaks to genuine technical ambition but has also meant the network spent years without the smart contract functionality that let competing layer-1s build developer ecosystems. Its IoT and enterprise-data narrative has yet to translate into meaningful on-chain economic activity or developer traction comparable to established smart contract platforms, and the project now competes directly with Aptos and Sui, both further along with the same Move-based approach and considerably larger developer and liquidity bases.

FAQ

What is the Tangle in IOTA?
The Tangle is IOTA's directed acyclic graph (DAG) data structure, an alternative to a traditional blockchain where new transactions confirm previous ones directly rather than being bundled into sequential blocks by miners.
Does IOTA still use a centralised Coordinator?
No. The Coordicide upgrade removed the Coordinator node that previously secured the network centrally, moving IOTA toward a genuinely decentralised consensus mechanism.
What is IOTA Rebased?
IOTA Rebased is a rebuilt smart contract layer using the Move programming language, the same language used by Aptos and Sui, designed to give IOTA proper DeFi and general-purpose smart contract capability it previously lacked.
What is IOTA's main competition?
Having adopted a Move-based architecture, IOTA now competes directly with Aptos and Sui for Move developers, alongside broader layer-1 competition from Ethereum-compatible chains for DeFi liquidity and applications.
