What Internet Computer does
Internet Computer (ICP) is a layer-1 network built by the DFINITY Foundation, led by Dominic Williams, designed to host not just smart contracts but full web applications and backend services directly on-chain. Its core unit is the 'canister', a smart contract that can serve web content, store data and run compute, using a reverse gas model where the canister, and by extension its developer, pays for computation rather than the end user paying gas per transaction.
The network uses chain-key cryptography, which lets ICP canisters interact directly with other chains without traditional bridges — ckBTC and ckETH are chain-key representations of Bitcoin and Ethereum that let ICP applications work with those assets more directly. The network is organised into subnets, groups of nodes that each run their own consensus and can be added to scale total capacity, governed collectively through the Network Nervous System (NNS), where staked ICP 'neurons' vote on protocol upgrades and parameters.
Risks worth knowing
ICP's reputation still carries the weight of its May 2021 launch, when the token collapsed from an implied valuation in the hundreds of billions to a small fraction of that within days, becoming one of the most-cited cautionary tales in crypto about hype-driven token launches and early unlock dynamics. Years on, ICP trades far below that peak, and large early-backer and team unlocks have remained a persistent overhang on price.
Developer adoption, while real, has been slower than the 'replace the cloud' framing implied at launch, and Internet Computer competes not just with other layer-1s but with decentralised compute and storage projects with narrower, more focused pitches. Node provider rewards involve a variable ICP minting mechanism tied to the token's fiat value, which adds a layer of tokenomic complexity worth understanding before assuming ICP's supply behaves like a simple fixed-issuance asset.
Governance is more active than most L1s through the NNS, but DFINITY Foundation's continued influence over ecosystem development and neuron voting patterns means genuine decentralisation of decision-making is still a work in progress rather than a finished state.
