Hyperliquid set out to prove that a fully on-chain order book could match the speed of a centralized exchange, and by most measures it's succeeded. Built by a small team of former quant traders operating as Hyperliquid Labs, the platform launched its own custom layer-1 blockchain specifically to run a perpetual futures exchange with sub-second execution and a real central limit order book, rather than the automated market-maker model most DeFi exchanges rely on.
What it does
Hyperliquid's chain splits into HyperCore, which runs the exchange's matching engine and order book natively at the protocol level, and HyperEVM, a general-purpose smart contract layer that lets other applications build on top and interact directly with exchange liquidity. HYPE, the native token, is used for gas, staking to help secure the network, and governance, while a meaningful share of trading fees flows into an on-chain Assistance Fund that buys back and burns HYPE — directly tying token value to platform trading volume. Notably, Hyperliquid launched without venture capital backing and distributed a large share of its token supply to early platform users via airdrop in late 2024, a rarity among major token launches.
That structure helped Hyperliquid capture a substantial share of on-chain perpetuals volume from established players like dYdX and GMX within roughly a year of its token launching, putting HYPE among the larger DeFi-native tokens by market capitalisation remarkably quickly.
Risks
Hyperliquid's own L1 is young, having only launched in 2024, and its validator set has been more permissioned and concentrated in its early phase than more established chains, with decentralization plans still maturing. Rapid growth has also meant rapid scrutiny: large, concentrated positions and occasional liquidation cascades on the platform have drawn comparisons to the kind of stress events that hit centralized exchanges. HYPE's meteoric rise into the top tier of crypto market caps within about a year of launch leaves it exposed to the sharp drawdowns typical of high-beta DeFi tokens once growth expectations cool. Competition is intensifying too, from both centralized exchanges' latency advantages and newer perpetual DEX entrants chasing the same on-chain trading volume. Regulatory clarity around on-chain leveraged trading, particularly for US-based users, also remains unresolved.
Hyperliquid's fair-launch, fee-funded buyback model has been genuinely novel for DeFi tokenomics — but it's still a young protocol carrying the operational and market risks that come with rapid, leverage-heavy growth.
