What Grass does
Grass is a decentralised physical infrastructure (DePIN) network, built on Solana, that turns users' unused internet bandwidth into a distributed web-scraping and data-collection layer for AI training. Users install a browser extension or app, share idle bandwidth by routing scraping requests through their residential IP address, and earn rewards in return. The pitch is that AI companies need vast amounts of clean, structured, unblocked web data to train large language models, and residential IP-based scraping is both harder to block and more representative of real internet access than data-centre scraping.
The network structures and cleans the scraped data before selling access to AI developers, positioning Grass as an infrastructure and data-supply layer for the AI training pipeline rather than a model or application itself. Contributors originally earned off-chain points during an extended pre-token phase, which were later converted into GRASS token allocations at the network's 2024 token generation event, with the token used for network payments and governance.
Why it drew attention
Grass tapped into two of 2024's biggest crypto narratives simultaneously — DePIN and AI — at a time when both were driving significant capital and speculative interest. Its backers included well-known crypto venture firms, and the points-to-token conversion model, similar to other DePIN launches, drove large early participation from users willing to run the extension for a shot at future rewards.
Risks worth knowing
Grass depends on continued demand from AI companies willing to pay for scraped web data, a market that could shrink if larger AI labs strike direct licensing deals with publishers, litigation over scraping practices intensifies, or model training shifts toward synthetic data. There are also open legal and ethical questions around routing scraping traffic through users' residential IPs without full visibility from the websites being scraped, an area regulators and platforms have targeted before with other bandwidth-sharing networks. As with most DePIN tokens, GRASS's price has also been highly sensitive to points-farming speculation rather than proven, sustained data-sale revenue.
