What Gnosis does

Gnosis is one of Ethereum's oldest projects, launched in 2015–17 with an initial focus on decentralised prediction markets. It has since become something closer to core DeFi infrastructure through two major spin-outs: Gnosis Chain (formerly xDai), an EVM-compatible, low-fee sidechain secured by GNO staking, and Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe), the multi-signature smart contract wallet that has become the de facto standard for securing DAO treasuries, protocol funds and institutional crypto holdings across Ethereum and beyond.

GNO is the token used to validate and secure Gnosis Chain, where validators stake GNO (in amounts far smaller than Ethereum's 32 ETH requirement) to run consensus, while the chain's gas token is a separate stablecoin-pegged asset, xDai, an unusual design that keeps transaction costs predictable in dollar terms rather than fluctuating with a volatile native token. Safe, meanwhile, doesn't require GNO to use, but its association with the Gnosis ecosystem and its own SAFE governance token both trace back to the same founding team and organisation.

The combined footprint is genuinely large by usage rather than by hype: Safe alone secures tens of billions of dollars in assets across countless DAOs, funds and protocols, making it one of the more systemically important pieces of Ethereum-adjacent infrastructure even though it rarely gets the attention of flashier DeFi apps.

Risks

Gnosis Chain, while EVM-compatible and battle-tested, has a smaller validator set and less economic security than Ethereum mainnet, meaning it inherits some of the trust trade-offs common to Ethereum sidechains and L2s rather than being maximally trust-minimised. GNO's own market relevance is also somewhat detached from Safe's success, since Safe's growth doesn't directly accrue value to GNO the way it might to a token more tightly coupled to wallet usage or fees.

The project's identity is genuinely split across several products — prediction markets, a sidechain, a wallet standard — which has made GNO's value proposition harder for casual observers to pin down compared with tokens tied to a single clear use case. As with any smart contract wallet infrastructure, Safe's own contracts remain a high-value target for attackers precisely because of how much value they secure, and any critical vulnerability there would have outsized consequences for the wider ecosystem, not just Gnosis Chain.

FAQ

What is the difference between GNO and xDai?
GNO is the token validators stake to secure Gnosis Chain's consensus. xDai is the chain's separate, dollar-pegged token used to pay gas fees, keeping transaction costs stable rather than tied to a volatile native asset.
Is Gnosis Safe the same thing as Gnosis Chain?
They share a common origin and organisation, but Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) is a multi-signature smart contract wallet used across many chains, while Gnosis Chain is a separate EVM sidechain secured by GNO staking. They're related but function independently.
What does GNO staking actually secure?
GNO staking secures consensus on Gnosis Chain, similar in structure to Ethereum's proof-of-stake validation but with a much lower staking requirement per validator.
How much value does Safe actually secure?
Safe is widely used to custody DAO treasuries and institutional crypto holdings, and has at various points secured tens of billions of dollars in combined assets across the wallets built on it, making it one of the more systemically important pieces of Ethereum-ecosystem infrastructure.
