About Gate

All assets →

GT, or GateToken, is the native utility token of Gate.io, one of the older centralised exchanges in crypto, first launched as Bter.com in 2013 and rebranded Gate.io in 2017 — and it does the same basic job as most exchange tokens: cheaper trading fees for holders and a bit of ecosystem glue.

What it does

Holding or staking GT unlocks lower spot and futures trading fees on Gate.io, priority access to the exchange's Startup launchpad for new token listings, and voting weight in occasional community polls on listings and features. Gate.io also built GateChain, a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain positioned around asset security and custody, where GT doubles as the gas token.

GateChain has nowhere near the developer activity or total value locked of established smart-contract chains, and functions mainly as an extension of the exchange's own infrastructure rather than an independent ecosystem competing for external builders. Total supply is capped, with the exchange periodically executing buy-backs and burns tied to platform profits, the same value-accrual playbook used by most large exchange tokens.

Risks

GT's fortunes are tied almost entirely to Gate.io's business, not to a decentralised protocol with its own independent demand — if the exchange loses market share, faces a licensing setback, or suffers a security incident, GT feels it directly. Gate.io has operated in a legal grey zone in several major markets over the years, without licences in some jurisdictions where it nonetheless serves users, and has been the subject of periodic regulatory warnings.

Exchange tokens as a category also carry a structural conflict of interest: the same company that issues the token controls the burn schedule, the listing decisions and the platform's financial disclosures, so holders are trusting Gate.io's own reporting rather than an independently auditable, on-chain protocol. GateChain's usage remains modest, meaning the 'utility token plus blockchain' pitch is currently doing far more work as marketing than as demonstrated demand.

FAQ

What does GT get you on Gate.io?
Discounted spot and futures trading fees, launchpad access for new listings, and some voting input on platform decisions — the standard exchange-token fee-discount model.
What is GateChain?
A proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain built by Gate Group, using GT as its gas token, focused on asset custody and security rather than competing broadly for third-party DeFi developers.
Does GT have a fixed supply?
Yes, GT has a capped total supply, with Gate.io running periodic buy-back-and-burn programmes funded by exchange profits.
Is Gate.io regulated in major markets?
Its licensing status varies significantly by jurisdiction, and it has operated without formal licences in some of the markets it serves — worth checking your local regulatory status before relying on it.
