What EigenLayer built
EigenLayer pioneered restaking on Ethereum: a mechanism letting users who've already staked ETH — directly or via liquid staking tokens like stETH — opt in to also securing additional services, called Actively Validated Services (AVSs), by extending the same economic stake to back them. In exchange, restakers earn extra rewards on top of standard staking yield, while AVSs — things like oracle networks, data availability layers, bridges and other infrastructure — get to bootstrap cryptoeconomic security from Ethereum's enormous existing staked capital instead of building trust and a validator set from scratch.
The trade-off is real: restaked ETH is exposed to slashing not just for misbehaviour on Ethereum itself but for failures in whatever AVSs it's securing, meaning restakers are taking on additional, sometimes opaque, risk in exchange for additional yield. That shared-security model was, for a period, one of the most closely watched narratives in crypto, drawing billions of dollars in restaked value even before EIGEN, the token, had significant utility live.
The shift to EigenCloud
In 2025 the project rebranded its broader platform as EigenCloud, repositioning restaking as one component of a wider verifiable computing stack that includes EigenDA, a data availability layer used by several major rollups, alongside tools aimed at letting developers build applications with cryptoeconomic guarantees around off-chain computation more generally. The ambition shifted from a restaking marketplace to something closer to a verifiable cloud-computing platform secured by Ethereum's economic weight.
What EIGEN does and the risks involved
EIGEN is used for governance over the protocol and, increasingly, as a token AVSs can use for slashing conditions independent of ETH itself, plus staking rewards for participants securing the network. The core risks are the same ones that shadowed restaking from the start: slashing risk cascading across multiple AVSs from a single fault, the systemic concern that concentrating so much of Ethereum's staked capital through one restaking layer creates a single point of failure for the broader ecosystem, and execution risk in whether EigenCloud's expanded ambitions attract the developer adoption needed to justify the platform's scope.
