About Dogecoin

All assets →

Dogecoin (DOGE) started in December 2013 as a parody. Software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer forked Litecoin's codebase, slapped the "Doge" Shiba Inu meme on it, and expected it to fade within weeks. It didn't.

What Dogecoin actually is

Technically, Dogecoin is a Litecoin fork using Scrypt proof-of-work and merged mining with Litecoin since 2014, which means Litecoin miners can secure both chains simultaneously at no extra cost. Blocks arrive roughly every minute, and unlike Bitcoin's fixed 21 million cap, Dogecoin has no supply limit at all. Miners currently generate around 10,000 new DOGE per block, adding roughly 5 billion coins a year to a circulating supply already north of 150 billion. That permanent inflation is by design - Dogecoin was never meant to be a store of value, it was meant to be spent.

The coin's cultural rise owes almost everything to internet virality and, later, to Elon Musk, who has tweeted about DOGE for years, accepted it for select Tesla merchandise, and floated the idea of DOGE-1, a SpaceX lunar mission "paid for" in Dogecoin. In 2021 the Dogecoin Foundation was revived with Vitalik Buterin among its advisors, giving the project a rare shot of technical credibility.

Risks worth knowing

Unlimited issuance means DOGE is structurally inflationary, so long-term holders are betting demand keeps outpacing that dilution. Price action is driven overwhelmingly by social sentiment and celebrity endorsement rather than fundamentals, network usage, or protocol upgrades, which makes it exceptionally volatile even by crypto standards. Wallet concentration is another concern: a relatively small number of large holders control a substantial share of supply, giving them outsized influence over price swings. Development has also slowed compared with the coin's early years, and there's no smart contract layer, so DOGE's utility remains largely limited to payments and tipping.

For all that, Dogecoin remains the most recognisable meme coin in the market, a reminder that in crypto, brand and community can matter as much as code.

FAQ

Does Dogecoin have a maximum supply?
No. Dogecoin is intentionally uncapped, with roughly 10,000 new DOGE mined every block and no halving schedule, so supply grows by around 5 billion coins annually.
Is Dogecoin the same as Elon Musk's "DOGE" government efficiency initiative?
No, they're unrelated entities that happen to share an acronym; the crypto token existed a decade before the 2025 U.S. government efficiency effort, though the naming overlap has repeatedly moved DOGE's price on social media buzz.
Can you use Dogecoin for smart contracts?
Not natively. Dogecoin has no smart contract functionality; it's a simple payments chain, and any DeFi-style features require wrapped versions on other networks like Ethereum.
Who controls Dogecoin's development?
The nonprofit Dogecoin Foundation, relaunched in 2021, oversees the roadmap and funds core development, with technical advisors including Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin, though the network's mining is fully decentralised via merged mining with Litecoin.
