About crvUSD

All assets →

crvUSD is the native, over-collateralised stablecoin minted by Curve Finance, the automated market maker built for stable-value swaps. Rather than copying MakerDAO's liquidation playbook, Curve founder Michael Egorov designed a bespoke mechanism called LLAMMA (Lending-Liquidating AMM Algorithm) that continuously rebalances collateral as prices move, aiming to avoid the sudden, all-or-nothing liquidations that have burned borrowers on other lending platforms.

What it does

Users deposit collateral — mainly ETH, wrapped BTC, wstETH and other liquid staking tokens — into isolated markets and mint crvUSD against it. Instead of a binary liquidated-or-not outcome, LLAMMA gradually converts collateral into crvUSD as its price falls through a defined band, and buys collateral back if the price recovers before the band is exhausted. A network of PegKeeper contracts can mint or burn crvUSD directly against paired stablecoin pools to nudge the price back toward a dollar when it drifts. Curve routes crvUSD through its own deep stableswap pools, giving it an unusually well-arbitraged trading range for a relatively young stablecoin.

crvUSD sits at the centre of Curve's flywheel: borrowing generates interest paid to liquidity providers and the DAO, veCRV holders vote on which collateral markets and parameters get approved, and the stablecoin's liquidity depth feeds back into Curve's core exchange business. It has also been adopted as collateral or a base trading pair across a growing list of other DeFi protocols and lending markets.

Risks

The soft-liquidation design is clever but hasn't been tested across a full multi-year cycle in every market condition. LLAMMA has performed well through several sharp drawdowns since its 2023 launch, but it concentrates a lot of trust in Curve's own contracts and oracles. Curve's governance and a large share of protocol control still runs through founder-linked wallets and veCRV whales, a centralisation point that critics and regulators both flag. The peg has wobbled during periods of thin liquidity, most notably around the July 2023 reentrancy exploit that hit several Curve pools and briefly rattled confidence across the ecosystem, even though crvUSD's own contracts were not directly compromised.

Anyone minting crvUSD is also taking on standard DeFi risks: oracle manipulation, collateral volatility outpacing the soft-liquidation bands, and the chance that a broad, fast crypto sell-off leaves secondary markets too thin for the model's gradual rebalancing to keep pace, forcing harsher outcomes than the design assumes.

FAQ

How is crvUSD different from Curve's CRV token?
CRV is Curve's governance and rewards token. crvUSD is a separate, dollar-pegged stablecoin minted against deposited collateral, playing a role closer to MakerDAO's DAI than to CRV.
What collateral can back crvUSD?
Primarily ETH, wrapped BTC, wstETH, sfrxETH and other approved liquid staking or restaking tokens, each held in its own isolated market with separate risk parameters set by Curve governance.
What happens if my collateral price falls sharply?
LLAMMA doesn't liquidate everything at once. It gradually converts a slice of your collateral into crvUSD as the price crosses your band, and swaps back if price recovers — you're only fully liquidated once the band is exhausted.
Has crvUSD ever lost its dollar peg?
It has traded slightly off a dollar during stress events, including the July 2023 Curve pool exploit, but PegKeeper arbitrage and deep Curve pool liquidity have pulled it back within a tight range each time so far.
