What Celestia does
Celestia is a modular blockchain built to do one thing well: provide data availability and consensus for other chains, rather than also executing transactions or settling disputes itself. That's a deliberate departure from monolithic layer 1s like Ethereum or Solana, which bundle execution, settlement, consensus and data availability into a single chain. Celestia lets rollups and app-chains publish their transaction data to it and inherit strong guarantees that the data is actually available for anyone to verify, without those chains needing to build or bootstrap their own validator sets from scratch. TIA is the token used to pay for that data availability, and to secure the network through staking.
Where it fits in
The modular thesis Celestia pioneered has moved from a contested narrative to something closer to established infrastructure by 2026. Projects including Manta Network, Dymension and Eclipse have built directly on Celestia's data availability layer, and Blobstream extends that same DA capacity to Ethereum-based rollups, letting them settle on Ethereum while offloading data costs to Celestia. Celestia's technical roadmap has kept pace: the network implemented 1GB blocks in early 2026, a substantial throughput jump intended to support tens of thousands of parallel rollups while keeping fees near zero even during busy periods. The upcoming Matcha upgrade introduces Proof-of-Governance, a mechanism designed to cut annual TIA issuance from roughly 5% down to as low as 0.25%, a meaningful change to the token's inflation profile if it lands as planned.
Risks worth knowing
Celestia's biggest structural risk is competitive: modular data availability is no longer Celestia's alone to define, with EigenDA, Avail and others chasing the same rollups, and switching costs for a chain choosing a DA layer are lower than switching an entire execution environment. TIA's value accrual also depends on rollups actually paying meaningful fees for data availability at scale, and DA remains one of the cheapest line items in a rollup's cost stack, meaning aggregate revenue could stay thin even with wide adoption. The transition to Proof-of-Governance and lower issuance is not yet proven in production, and any modular architecture carries its own complexity risk — a bug or liveness failure in Celestia's DA layer would ripple through every rollup depending on it, a different failure mode than a single monolithic chain going down alone.
