What BitTorrent (BTT) does

BitTorrent is the decades-old peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol acquired by Justin Sun's TRON ecosystem in 2018. BTT launched in 2019 as a token designed to incentivise seeding — paying users to keep sharing files rather than leeching bandwidth without contributing back — through a feature called BitTorrent Speed, and later expanded into BTFS (BitTorrent File System), a decentralised storage network positioned as an alternative to IPFS and Filecoin.

In 2022 the token went through a large redenomination, relaunching as BTT on BitTorrent Chain (BTTC), a network built to interoperate across TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain, with the exchange rate set at 1,000 new BTT per old BTT — a housekeeping move common among tokens that launched with extremely low per-unit prices, but one that added a layer of confusion for holders tracking the asset across the transition. BTT is now used for BTFS storage payments, BTTC cross-chain transaction fees, and staking within the TRON-aligned ecosystem Justin Sun has built around TRX, BTT and USDD.

Risks

The single biggest overhang on BTT is regulatory: in March 2023 the US SEC charged Justin Sun and several of his affiliated entities with fraud and unregistered securities offerings, specifically naming BTT and TRX among the tokens involved, and separately alleged manipulative wash trading and undisclosed celebrity promotion. That case materially raises the bar for anyone assessing BTT's legal risk profile relative to tokens without an active fraud allegation attached to their issuer.

Beyond the legal overhang, BTT's actual utility question hasn't fully resolved either — most BitTorrent users historically never adopted the token-incentivised seeding features, and BTFS storage adoption remains modest next to established decentralised storage networks. The project's fortunes are also unusually concentrated in one person: Justin Sun's continued involvement, reputation and legal standing directly affects TRON, BTT, TRX and the wider ecosystem simultaneously, meaning BTT carries founder-concentration risk well above what's typical even for centralised-feeling crypto projects.

FAQ

What does the BTT token actually get used for?
BTT is used to pay for decentralised storage on BitTorrent File System (BTFS), to incentivise seeding through BitTorrent Speed, and to pay transaction fees and support staking on BitTorrent Chain (BTTC).
Why did BTT get redenominated in 2022?
BitTorrent relaunched its token as BTT on the new BitTorrent Chain in 2022, converting old BTT to new BTT at a 1,000:1 ratio, a redenomination intended to simplify unit pricing after the original token's price had fallen to fractions of a cent.
What is the SEC case against Justin Sun about?
In March 2023 the SEC charged Justin Sun and related entities with fraud, unregistered securities offerings and market manipulation, naming TRX and BTT specifically among the tokens involved, alongside allegations of undisclosed celebrity endorsements.
Is BitTorrent Chain (BTTC) the same as the original BitTorrent protocol?
No. The original BitTorrent protocol is the decades-old peer-to-peer file-sharing standard. BitTorrent Chain is a separate blockchain built by Sun's team to handle BTT transactions and cross-chain interoperability, layered on top of the BitTorrent brand rather than being the file-sharing protocol itself.
