What Aster does
Aster is a multi-chain decentralised exchange focused on perpetual futures and spot trading, formed through a 2024 merger of Astherus and APX Finance. It offers leveraged perpetual contracts, a 'hidden order' feature that lets large traders obscure position size to reduce front-running, and multi-asset collateral support so users aren't limited to depositing stablecoins alone.
The platform's rise through 2025 was propelled by its association with YZi Labs, the family investment office linked to Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, which lent Aster instant credibility and distribution within the Binance-adjacent trading community. Aggressive points and airdrop farming campaigns pulled in large trading volumes fast, positioning Aster as a direct challenger to Hyperliquid, dYdX and GMX in the increasingly crowded perpetual-DEX category.
ASTER, the platform token, captures fee revenue and governance rights, with its value closely tied to how much of that volume proves durable once incentive emissions taper off.
Risks
The perpetual-DEX sector has a well-worn pattern: incentive-driven volume surges, then cools sharply once points campaigns end, and Aster's meteoric volume growth hasn't yet been tested through a full incentive wind-down. Smart contract risk is material given the complexity of leveraged derivatives logic and the platform's relatively short live history. The YZi Labs association is double-edged — it drove adoption but also ties Aster's reputation to Binance-ecosystem controversies and regulatory scrutiny that has followed CZ-linked ventures. Traders should also weigh how much of Aster's headline volume reflects genuine price discovery versus wash trading chasing token rewards, a recurring accusation levelled at fast-growing perp DEXs across market cycles.
